This fresh and fruity cocktail is made with vodka or gin, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and a salt rim. Ideal for two or a crowd!
As you know, I am always entertaining and hosting parties for friends and family. One of my favorite aspects of playing hostess is creating quick, easy and crowd-pleasing cocktails that can be mixed together in advance.
Recently I created a salty dog cocktail which is made with just a few simple ingredients: gin or vodka. grapefruit juice and a salted rim glass. If you love margaritas with salt, you will love this citrusy cocktail recipe.
How Do You Rim a Glass with Salt?
It’s super easy! Step 1: pour a little coarse sea salt on to a small plate and rub a lime wedge around the rim of each glass.
Next, carefully rub the rim of the glass around the plate to evenly rim the glass with salt. As you’ve probably figured out by now, you must do this step before you start filling the glass with ice and other cocktail ingredients.
This method is the same whether you’re rubbing the rim with salt, sugar or a combination of both!
What Type of Grapefruit Juice is Used in a Salty Dog?
Any type works but I love using 100% real pink grapefruit juice. I find it to be a little less bitter and sweeter than non-pink grapefruit juice.
What’s the Difference Between a Salty Dog and a Greyhound Cocktail?
Both cocktails are made with gin or vodka and grapefruit juice. The only difference is that a salty dog is served in a salt rim glass.
Should I Use Gin or Vodka?
Either one works – use whichever you prefer or have on hand.
Can I Prepare This Cocktail Ahead of Time?
Absolutely! I like to mix the grapefruit and vodka a day before I plan to entertain friends. I keep it in a pitcher in the refrigerator and use it as needed. Then, when my guests arrive, I salt each rim one by one. It’s a great way to break the ice as guests arrive and it gets them involved and excited about their drink!
Your straw is waiting.
